Our Waingaro Winter Weekend Wandering was based at Waingaro Scout Camp - great facilities and plenty
of beds!
Saturday
Our morning walk was the Northern Karamu Walkway followed by a short
walk down Old Mountain Rd to the Ed Hillary Hope Reserve for hot soup and lunch. Our afternoon walk was
through the reserve up to the airstrip for views towards Raglan of the wind turbines and forest restoration
by the Native Forest Restoration Trust.
Before we had our dinner Tina suggested we sing the
Scout Grace For health and strength and daily food. One guy in the group say he knew it by heart! As
we waited for dinner on Saturday night, Murray decorated the table with gorse and leaves.
Sunday
The more hardy completed the Southern Karamu while the rest walked the Nikau Loop Track and
visited the Kaniwhaniwha Caves in the Pirongia Forest Park with a special guide Alasdair. About 70% of
Karamu Walkway (South) was muddy, a section of it was as running as porridge!
A great weekend
despite the misty mountain tops - pleasant walks, fun (competitive) games including rummikub, delicious
food and good company.
