Our group of 13 met at Awaroa Rd opposite the Kelston Community Centre at 2pm and we set off along the
Sunhill Reserve bush track, an undulating path with many steps up and down coming out to the western
end of the Waikumete Cemetery.
Leader Mark Gibson then took us on a tour of the cemetery. He
explained that a gravestone may give quite a bit of information about the deceased person. It is interesting
to see how various gravestones are decorated with flowers and other decorations. Mark showed us some
gravestones of deceased relatives. There were memorials to those who died in the 1918 Influenza Epidemic,
the Holocaust and the Erebus air crash disaster of 1979. We went past the Chapel Of Faith In The Oaks
and carried on past the main chapel and crematorium and had a look at the Columbarium memorials. These
included walls displaying memorials to those who had been cremated. We continued on past the Lord Harish
Chandra Kovil temple, and finished back at our starting point at 3:55pm. Mark finished by telling us
that it is most important to have a will showing who would get one's estate on passing away. Distance
4.1km.
