The walk entailed walking the edge of the Waikato River starting from Churchill Rd, Rangariri and finishing
at Dragway Rd, Meremere. The track forms part of the Te Araroa and was traversed from south to north
rather than the usual north to south, a distance of about 17 km. Three cars were left at Dragway Rd to
enable drivers to be ferried back to Rangiriri.
All participants met at the café in Rangariri
around 10am for a coffee and departed at about 10:30am. The weather was very hot and sunny and the ground
dry underfoot, clouding over towards the end.
The first half of the walk was easy being adjacent
to a road. We jumped the fence to the road when a number of bulls on the track become potentially problematic.
The second half of the walk proved to be more challenging due the clay track having been chewed up
by cattle while soft, then setting hard becoming very uneven. This was challenging for all on the feet
and ankles. Also traversing from south to north made it more difficult to acquire and navigate along
the easiest route.
Apart from the above there were great views of the Waikato River and its environs.
We also passed 9 people doing the Te Araroa Trail and had some good conversations with some of them.
Devotions was scheduled for the afternoon but did not occur due to the participants being extensively
spread out.
