Friday
Phillip drove to Waihaha carpark on SH32, where he deposited his vehicle. He was picked
up by Roger and Heather, and taken to Waitomo. The others travelled from Auckland to Waitomo Top 10 Holiday
Park. Accommodation was in Deluxe Cabins with shared bathrooms. We had dinner at a local hotel.
Saturday
We travelled from Waitomo to the end of Mangakahu Valley Road (100km, 1h30m) From there we tramped
to Hauhungaroa Hut (6 bunks) (7km, 4-6h). Weather was cloudy but fine. There was a slow group of four,
and a faster group of four. 6 of us managed to sleep in the hut, 2 outside in a tent.
Sunday
We hiked Hauhungaroa Hut to Waihaha Hut (12km, 5-9h). Weather cloudy then sunny. Again a slow group
of four, and faster group of four. There were some steep downhill sections and challenging streams gulches.
Bryan injured his leg in a fall but somehow managed to continue on to the hut. 2 slept in the hut, the
remainder outside in tents.
Monday
We departed Waihaha Hut to SH32 (9.4km, 3h). This
time there was a fast group of 5 and slower group of 3 who left later. Weather was sunny. Bryan managed
to walk out with difficulty. Upon exit at 11am, the drivers were transported to Mangakahu roadend to
collect vehicles. One then returned to SH32 to collect the slower group.
Phillip presented these
reflections during the trip: The term "creation" in the Bible refers to God being responsible for the
universe coming to be (its origin, e.g. Genesis 1:1, Romans 1:20). However it also refers to God being
responsible for the universe continuing to be (its operation, e.g. Psalm 104, Amos 4:13). God's ongoing
work (see John 5:17) is described in Hebrews 1:2 (sustaining), Colossians 4:17 (holding together), Revelation
4:11 (causing it to have being). Scripture clearly teaches that God's acts are necessary both for the
making and the preserving of the universe.
