WAIROA COSSEY WANDER

Hunua Ranges               Sat 7 Jun

Eight hikers met at Hunua Falls on a chilly Saturday morning with a forecast of showers, possible hail and possible thunderstorms! As it turned out it was perfect weather for a hike with no rain and some weak sunshine that tried to warm us up.

The hike started at the Hunua Falls that were very full after recent rain.  The track then climbed through the bush to Cossey's dam.  We paused for a brief devotion on Jesus' experience of solitude and how it can bring close to God's creative heart.  The hike then continued with occasional views of Cossey Dam till we arrived at the junction that took us onto the recently reopened Wairoa-Cossey track.  The condition of the track dramatically changed from a well groomed and gravelled path to slippery roots, mud, tree falls and a rollercoaster hike along a ridge line - we all thoroughly enjoyed the challenge!  We ran out of time to reach the goal of the Wairoa dam, although we did have glimpses of the lake.

After a quick lunch we reversed our hike exiting on the Massey track back at Hunua Falls.

Total time, 6hr 14min; Total Distance 13.2km
