Saturday
Eight members had an enjoyable and informative weekend. We drove to the start of the
Leitch's Clearing track in the Whareorino Conservation Area, South Waikato. As we hiked to the Leitch's
Hut, each participant took turns at being the lead and tail-end charlie, with one volunteering to be
in charge of first aid. We were to look for aspects of the track to alert members of the group, keep
in touch the whole group, regroup at intersections or where the trail is unclear.
We arrived at
Leitch's Hut early afternoon, and we had training as follows: erect Zeus Tents and emergency fly (Paul
& Bryan), use of Stoves (David W), first Aid (Bryan), what to do if you are separated from the group
(Paul), website forms & resources (Linda), hut etiquette (Bryan), and planning a menu (Kim). Two of
us volunteered to prepare the dinner, which we had about 5:30pm.
That evening we covered map reading,
track descriptions & route planning, navigation, PLB (Bryan), ordering equipment (Tina), what is a Survival
Kit (Linda), weather, effects on people & environment and river crossings (Bryan), risk management &
track research (Diana), costing and handling payments (David R).
Sunday
We prepared and
ate breakfast, packed up food, equipment and rubbish, and swept the hut. Departure was at 9am, once again
we each had a go at being lead and tail-end charlie, as we retraced our footsteps back to the cars. The
tramp finished at midday, and we headed home, having learned heaps of practical stuff for our tramps.
