KAIMAI COMMUNITY PROJECT

22-23 Mar

A very productive workday was held on the Kaimai Ridgeway Track on Saturday by eight members of the ABTC and Derek de Jong of Search and Rescue, his son Marcel and friend Maurice of Youth Search and Rescue. After introductions at the park entrance Ann Vukojevich set off with a group of five along County Rd and Sophie Ye led a group of six on the more direct route of the ascent of the mountain. Ann had detailed knowledge of the work sites on County Rd from her personal visits and there were windfalls which necessitated cutting and man handling of wood. Both groups encountered very small gorse sown by larger plants removed on previous workdays. Members reported on the high standard of the tracks as we have maintained them twice a year since 2016.

Club members really appreciated the keen and significant contributions of Derek de Jong and his Youth members of Search and Rescue. The popularity of the tracks was apparent for we met many walkers, runners and cyclists. We thanked Ann for her leadership and guidance to worksites of the County Rd group plus her catering for our breakfasts and Sunday lunch. We were encouraged by Paul, who had been President when the club entered into the KRT project, who on learning that there were withdrawals from our group offered that he and his wife Ruth would work twice as hard to make up for the withdrawals.
