On the weekend of 15-16 November, 4 people, tramped part of the Kaimai Ranges, the Te Tuhi track onto
the North-South track and the Mangamuka track.
On the Saturday morning, with packs on, we set
off in showers and low cloud. The first 1.5kn was across steep farmland before climbing into steep bush.
In the first 3km, we had climbed 400 meters.
The sun came out for our lunch break at Te Whare
Okioki Hut. We briefly lost the track when we found ourselves following a bait line. After backtracking
and bush crashing for 15 minutes, we were back on the right track. Praise God for Topo Map app and the
orange markers.
A large tree had come down over the track, which had brought other trees and
vines with it. It required team effort to get everyone through. Unfortunately we had to do it both Saturday
and Sunday.
There was about 500 metres of swamp to navigate just before arriving at the Mangamuka
Hut, where we stayed the night. That day we walked 12.19km and climbed over 650 meters. This hut is
a cute 4-bed hut, which we had the privilege off giving a deep clean as part of the "LOVE Our Huts" programme,
which is run by the Federated Mountain Clubs. It involved cleaning windows, mattresses, benches, the
toilet and checking doors, windows, hinges, locks etc. DOC resources for hut maintenance are stretched,
which makes volunteering more essential than ever for NZ's 800 non-wardened public huts.
The next
day we finished cleaning the hut and walked out in beautiful sunshine. We were back at the car park by
11.40am, having walked 6.64km. We sat in the long grass by the car, eating lunch while David shared his
devotions from John 20:20 Jesus appearing to his disciples after his resurrection and showing them the
wounds on his hands and side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. This event followed Jesus's
appearance to Mary Magdalene and his discussion with her outside the tomb.
