Saturday
We set off from Bracken Ave at 8:00am and made our way down to the track entrance at
the end of Hot Springs Road near Katikati. From there, we followed the Tuahu Track until we reached the
junction with the North-South Track leading to the hut. The tramp was mostly uphill on the way in, with
steady climbing and some steeper pinches, making it a solid workout. The weather was wet, foggy in
exposed places, and windy, and the track quickly became boggy underfoot. Despite the tough conditions,
spirits were high and everyone enjoyed the challenge. We reached Te Rereatukahia Hut by about 3:00pm,
where we got a fire going and shared a wonderful home-cooked dinner together. After a long day's walk,
we all had an early night.
Sunday
We were up early to prepare for the trip back. The
track was mostly downhill, though with a few rolling ups and downs along the way, which made the walk
out easier and gave us time to enjoy the views. The weather started off windy, but as the day went on
the sun came out and we had a real mix of conditions. The track was still boggy in places, but the walk
was made worthwhile by the magnificent views - across the Hauraki Plains on one side, and out toward
Tauranga on the other. It was a memorable weekend tramp, with plenty of laughs, great company, and
the satisfaction of reaching the hut in challenging conditions.
