Eight members met at 9:00am in the Mountain Carpark and were ready for the Kaimai Community Project.
The two leaders (Ann and David) planned that Group One (three members) would work on the Karangahake
Summit Track and Group Two (five members) on the Old County Road. Both of the groups walked together
along the County Road and onto the Karangahake Summit Track. Group Two headed towards the Summit and
arrived at the Mountain Link Track in 1.5 hours. Their work began here and then continued along the Old
County Road.
The tracks were mostly walkable but there were fallen trees, blocked drainage, and
overgrown trees. Where the trees had fallen and blocked the tracks, the group cut branches or trunks,
then cleared them from the tracks. There were a few places where water accumulated on the tracks due
to fallen branches and leaves. We cleared the branches and leaves and also dug channels to direct water.
There were overgrown trees covering part of the tracks. We used loppers to cut small branches or hand
saws to cut thicker branches.
We stopped for lunch around 12:00pm. After about 20 minutes we
continued working on the Old County Road. Since the tracks are in the bush and seldom get sunlight, there
was almost no gorse on the tracks worked on by Group two. We returned to the Mountain Carpark around
3:00pm.
Group One trimmed back some areas that were very overgrown on the Karangahake Summit Track.
We cleared areas of gorse, and a few pampas were trimmed. These will need more attention next time. A
woolly nightshade plant was also cut. There were areas of fallen branches that were cleared away from
the track.
