What a stunning day to be out exploring the beauty and history of the Wait?kere Ranges! On a calm, windless
day, 16 trampers - including 3 enthusiastic guests - set off from the Arataki Visitor Centre for a 17.5km
journey through lush bush and heritage-rich trails.
Led by the ever-knowledgeable Joy Webb, with
support from co-leader Linda Zhang, the group enjoyed not only the scenic route but also a wealth of
fascinating commentary. Joy brought the track to life with her deep knowledge of the area's past, making
each step all the more meaningful.
We paused for a well-earned lunch at Mt Atkinson Park, where
Joy shared the inspiring story of Henry Atkinson - the original landowner who generously gifted the
area to the city council. A special moment in a special place.
The tramp concluded at 3:30pm
with a visit to the Jacobsons Depot historic railway station - once a bustling hub and a great reminder
of the region's vibrant past.
