Eleven members enjoyed a active long weekend of tramping at Whananaki. The longest footbridge in the
Southern Hemisphere is an interesting feature and the pristine beaches are really beautiful. The Northland
bush is also magnificent with tall trees for shade during the hot weather.
Friday
We
departed from The Bracken at 7am to travel to Whananaki. On arrival seven of us did the longer walk from
Ngunguru to Whananaki, including the Old Coach Rd and Whananaki Coastal Track, distance 23km. The others
walked the Old Coach Rd for about 2 km then return to the cars and to go on to Whananaki Holiday Park
and settle in. A yummy dinner of sweet and sour chicken was served about 7pm.
Saturday
Four of us set out at 8am to walk the Helena Ridge Track (14km) on Saturday. Sadly
this track was badly damaged by the recent storms. The rest of us left about 9am to walk along the waterfront
and enjoyed some nearby beaches.
That evening we had a dinner of spaghetti bolognese, enjoyed
devotions about our identity in Christ, and discussed ideas for our Sunday walks.
Sunday
We had our breakfast, packed up and vacated the holiday park. Our morning walk included the Whananaki
Coastal Track. The rocky shore route proved an enjoyable adventure to reach the Capitaine Bougainville
Memorial (8km) before our drive home on Sunday afternoon.
COST: $180 (accommodation 2 nights
$107; travel $50; food $23)
