A dull overcast morning gave way to brilliant sunshine just as 41 people gathered at the Western Springs
Stadium carpark. After the usual intros and karakia, we set out to go into the Western Springs lake reserve.
As we entered the reserve we saw a whole lot of eels swimming in the Meola Creek. Like all children,
the kids had a lot of fun chasing the various birds in the park.

We went up through the bush behind the lake and zoo to come out on Old Mill Rd in Westmere, with
its characteristic old houses. From there we went on past the original entrance to Auckland Zoo, which
no longer serves as a public entrance and is used for operational purposes only.

Dropping down Motions Road with views of the zoo, we went through Jaggers Bush to come out onto the
Seddon Fields. After crossing Meola Rd we went into the Meola Reserve, following the east track, and
had views of the Waitemata Harbour and the Birkenhead area.

We had our afternoon tea break on this section of open pasture at 3:15pm. June told us about how
the reef was made of a volcanic lava flow, believed to have come from Three Kings but more recently believed
to originate from Mt St John in Epsom. Beulah shared about the apostle Peter, how he was a faithful follower
of Jesus then later denied Him. He later was the disciples' leader, then headed the Christian church
of Jerusalem before Paul took over. She said that God had changed Peter from a state of denial of Jesus
to church leader just as man had transformed the barren lava field into the grass and bush Meola Reserve
of today.
Afterwards we returned to Meola Rd along the west track, then followed the MOTAT tramline
to Motions Rd and arrived at the Auckland Zoo café at 3:45pm to enjoy coffee or icecreams. We ambled
back around the Western Springs back to the carpark, bringing to a close a lovely afternoon walk.
