Heavy rain in the morning giving way to blue skies at lunchtime, plus the Rugby World Cup games, did
not deter six people from exploring part of the spacious Totara Park in Manurewa. Three of us met at
The Bracken at 1:30pm and met up with the others at the carpark off the highest point on Redoubt Rd.
At 2:10pm we set out along the Bridle Track, a gravel road, and came across a group of orange-clad
offenders serving community work waiting with their wardens for their tools to arrive, as we went up
to the lookout. There was a panoramic view all around of the Manukau with Auckland city in the distance,
and the rolling countryside to the east.

From there we went down the bridal track to the bush area in the valley to walk part of the new Puhinui
Stream Forest Trail, a well-formed and stepped loop track. There was plenty to see, including nikau palms
and a puriri tree with a native orchid growing on one of its branches.

We had our afternoon tea break at a shelter in the picnic area, just as a shower of rain passed over.
