Ten keen members accepted the challenge of Taranaki that supreme symmetrical mountain rising 2518m above
the Tasman sea. Parahaki and the sugar loaves were prominent points of recognition at New Plymouth as
we viewed from the summit on 27 Jan. Three members climbing the mountain for the first time were ecstatic
at their success and experience. We had left our gear at Maketawa hut and we enjoyed May's good menu
on our descent. On the Sunday we walked to Holly hut in the intermittent rain for the opportunities to
walk from there but people chose to rest in the cosy conditions. On the Monday we descended to the visitors
centre for lunch and an early return home.
