Fifteen hikers met Lester and Rae Simpson, volunteer members of SOSSI Shakespear Open Sanctuary Society Inc, at the Waterfall Gully entrance to Shakespear Regional Park. Rae was on the original committee and Lester is a volunteer field worker each week. Lester outlined the development of the park and sanctuary before leading us through Waterfall Gully bush and on to the Lookout where we marvelled at the wide views of the gulf. We walked on to Te Haruhi Bay where we had lunch and discussion with Peter and Leonora de Vries, Baptist Missionaries in India. We walked on to Okoromai Bay and we visited the historic woolshed and read the informative displays before ascending to the viewing place then past the work station and across the peninsula to our cars at Waterfall Gully.

The hot afternoon ended with a swim and BBQ at Nelson Young’s home at Red Beach.
