Neither the Starlight Symphony concert at the Auckland Domain nor the Super 14 Rugby stopped almost forty
people from coming along to Carey Baptist College to tramp their way around the central South Island
and the Far North following the footsteps of those who went on the Club trip to inland Canterbury and
an unofficial trip to Houhora and Cape Reinga.
The evening started off in the usual way with mix-and-mingle
over drinks at 5pm. Photograph albums of those who did these trips in real life were on display for everyone
to browse.

Later in the evening we set off to the South Island to tramp the Kaikoura Coast Track, christening
the data projector the Club had just bought as a special offer from FMC. We returned to Kaikoura to climb
Mt Fyffe and walk through the deep and narrow crevice of Sawcut Gorge. The St James Walkway was our next
major trail, a trip accompanied by plenty of liquid sunshine. We also sloshed our way through Harper
Pass, Lake Sumner and the Nelson Lakes area, with water up to our tummies in places, and enjoyed a mini
organ recital from Peter and his pocket-size mouth-operated instrument.

Nelson and Alex wandered along the King’s Highway of the Queen Charlotte Track, carrying a pack,
bush shirt and guitar.

We then flew to the Far North to join Gary and his team in climbing Mt Camel, seeing the two oceans
meet at Cape Reinga and catch fish from his boat. On our way back to Carey after our 90-minute journey
we were told of the next summer tramp, to Westland, and Club president Phillip presented Paul and Val
with decorative tiles for their hard work in organising the South Island trip. We touched down with a
prayer from Phillip.
