About 35 people showed up for the Summer Tramps Reunion at Carey Baptist College in Penrose. This began
at 5pm with drinks. The red ABTC 40th anniversary banner that was displayed at the jubilee weekend in
Ngaruawahia last September was set up along the wall of the dining room. Dinner was served at 5:45pm,
we lined up to help ourselves to meat, salads and then dessert.
Afterwards we went into the chapel
for the formal part of the evening. This began with devotions from Ian Marshall, who said that not everything
you read or see in the news is necessarily true, with all sorts of ideas and opinions and even fake news
being shared. But this is not so with the Bible, having reference points and points of stability, and
scripture leads to the fact that God is our salvation in the tomb of Jesus. Jesus actually said, and
confessed openly, I am your truth, the way and the life. Ian quoted Psalm 119:105. Your word is a lamp
on my feet. So the Bible is true, and God can build trust.
We went to the top of the South Island
following the footsteps of those who did the summer tramps. Paul Ungemuth and Christine Marshall showed
slides of the summer tramps to Queen Charlotte, David Walker spoke about the D’Urville tramp and Simon
Marshall showed slides of this. Barbara Langridge showed slides of the Sabine trip, and Paul showed
some of the Travers-Sabine tramp. Ann Vukojevich spoke of doing a tramp to Angelus Hut on her own.
Linda Piggott shared about a trip she organised to Northland on 17-26 January. Her group of eight went
to Whangarei, Matauri Bay, Matai Bay, Coopers Beach, Houhora, Rawene, and Omapere. This was a leisurely
trip staying in holiday parks and enjoying short walks and swims in the sea.
We had a presentation
about the 2020-21 summer tramps which will be in Fiordland and will include the Milford and Tuatapere
Hump Ridge tracks plus other walks.
