The Summer Tramps Reunion is always a popular event, and this year we had about 50 people turn up to
walk the Routeburn, Wanaka, Glenorchy and the Bay of Islands in the footsteps of those who had been there
over the Christmas holidays.
We began with a pot-luck BBQ from 4pm onwards, where those who had
been on the tramps, and a large number who had not done so, were able to catch up with one another.

At 6pm we gathered in the lounge area for the formal part of the evening. Phillip began with devotions
in which he asked three questions: Why do we go tramping? - for the joys set before us, we anticipate
something ahead of us that will bring delight and happiness. Why did Jesus come to earth to live and
to die? - for the joys set before Him he headed for the cross (Hebrews 12) he knew he would have the
great joy of presenting every believer whom He had died for to the Father completely faultless. Why should
we continue to love, serve and obey God? - because of the joy set before us. There is a hope, something
that continually inspires, one day I shall stand amongst all people I have had any spiritual influence.
This will occur when Christ returns. I thes 2:19-20 we are that joy. The people whom we had influenced
will be thanking us. The glory and grandeur will outstrip anything on earth. Those whom we helped to
lead to Jesus will be the crowning achievement for our lives. We won’t regret any sacrifice we made for
this.
Phillip then gave a brief presentation about A Rocha, a new worldwide Christian conservation
movement; Helena spoke about the upcoming Tramping Challenge; and Andrew shared about the ABTC Photographic
Competition. Gifts of appreciation were handed out to those who had organised the Summer Tramps.
We then began our tramping, following the leaders of those who tramped the Wanaka, Arrowtown, Routeburn,
Greenstone-Caples, Cardrona-Lowburn, Brewster Hut, Bay of Islands, Motatapu Shania Twain track, Fernburn,
Ress-Dart and Cascade Saddle. At 7:30pm we had a break for dessert and cuppa, and Peter Y brought the
evening to a close with a karakia about 8:45pm.
