The group of 24 travelled on Fullers Ferry from Auckland City to Rangitoto arriving at 10am. We divided
into four groups with leaders, prayed for our adventure and proceeded to climb to the top, enjoying substantial
areas of shade and displays outlining the history of the island. The stages of bush growth being established
on the scoria was evident to see, from the initial lichens and ferns to fully grown trees and shrubs.
We enjoyed the gradual ascent mostly in shade.
Most trampers took advantage of the opportunity
to explore the lava caves after a one hour ascent. Then it was a short 20 min to the summit, where extensive
views of the Waitemata Harbour were at their best with the sunny weather and blue sky. Some took the
short direct walk up the steps to the top and others circled around the crater (750m) to the summit.
Notices about wasp warnings were noted.
When all groups had arrived we descended into the shade
and sat on the boarded steps to eat. We headed off down the steps/boardwalk to the point of entry for
visitors who take the tourist train to the top. Here were rows of spotlights, lined up for the Anniversary
weekend Light Display from the summit and presumably viewed from all over the city at night. From this
point the wide vehicle track became exposed to the sun and it was a hot one hour walk to Mackenzie Bay
on the coast. Many of us were glad to swim in the crystal clear water.
Just 1.5 hours of walking
still to reach the ferry, so we set off again on another sun exposed but wind-sheltered road. How hot
we were! One of the group was stung by a wasp so we accessed the First Aid under a shady tree. The last
15minutes followed a path skirting the beach and beside some of the historic quaint old baches still
preserved on the island. Some speedy ones reached the wharf in time to swim, but others just made it
to the ferry for departure. We were incredibly hot and made use of the drink service on the ferry! An
enjoyable day was had by all.
