One of the events to mark the 30th anniversary of the Club was a walking progressive dinner, based at
three homes in the Remuera area. People were given the option of walking between the venues, with those
who had cars being taken back to the start afterwards to collect them. 33 people came along.
We
gathered at the home of Warren and Jackie next to the Baptist church on Remuera Rd at 6pm for drinks
and nibbles. Peter gave Geoff T a picture frame and a calendar for a birthday present.

At 6:45pm we set out for Paul’s home in Gerard Way, 25 minutes’ walk away, where we enjoyed a yummy
meal of lasagne and lettuce salad.

We were there until 8:15pm. Day became night with a full moon as we made our half-hour walk to Jocelyn’s
home in Waikato Place.

A few of us had a go on the ground-level trampoline behind the house. We were entertained by a display
of fireworks in the distance, being part of the annual Festival Roses at the Parnell Rose Gardens.

We enjoyed a delicious dessert before sitting down for the formal part of the evening led by Club
president Barbara, starting about 9:25pm. She had prepared a set of cards with clues on them, and invited
us to come forward in turn according to how long we had been in the Club. Each person would then have
to tell an experience or anecdote from their time in the Club according to their clue, although swapping
of clues was allowed.
David K recalled a brilliant sunset at Cape Brett; John read a poem about
the first Club trip in 1979; Roger remembered Stephen King climbing the trees of Pureora Forest in bare
feet; Linda shared how she climbed Mt Taranaki with the encouragement of her fellow trampers; Jocelyn
couldn’t forget the sandflies on the Heaphy Track; Phillip N recalled doing the Tongariro Crossing in
atrocious weather; Barbara told of the beauty of an outdoor communion service; Ali shared thoughts from
devotions on a couple of tramps; David W spoke of seeing heaps of socks; Jeff recalled seeing frozen-white
boots on a winter tramp to Bog Inn; and newcomer Christine talked about doing a river crossing as a teenager.
David K sang a song he had written, Thirty Years of ABTC, to Morning Has Broken, using his autoharp
or “lazy man’s guitar”. Phillip D read Linger a Little Longer, a contemplative poem he had written
for a contest. The other Phillip had a birthday cake from Geoff and Rose brought in to him by his fiance
Ali to blow out the candles. Supper followed, and it was as late as 11pm when we left to go home.
