15 people turned up to participate in this loop track which begins on Lone Kauri Road above Karekare
Beach. The two parties arrived at the car park within a few minutes of each other, one from Bracken Ave
and the other from Henderson. The trips in the cars gave time to get acquainted with the newbies in the
group.
The usual safety briefing and shoe spraying took place before we headed up the Odlins
track which was in good condition despite the bad weather we have had. Two river crossings are on this
leg and you get across these streams without getting too wet.
A short break was had at the camp
site on Odlins track at the stream crossing and you can have a toilet stop there, as the site has a long
drop. The group travelled well on this first leg to Orange Peel corner via Walker Ridge track, then onto
the new shelter at the Pararaha Valley camp site for lunch. This site has become popular and there were
many groups camping overnight.
A little alliteration took place on the track thanks to David Walker.
David Walker forgot his walking stick back on Walker Ridge Track so David Walker had to walk all the
way back to Walker Ridge track to find his stick and walk quickly back from Walker Ridge Track to catch
the group and David Walker. Just as well David Walker is a seasoned walker.
Once lunch was finished
we completed the last part of the journey up Buck Taylor Track to the car park. The last stream needed
to be forded and you must get your feet wet except for one of the group. The climb up Buck Taylor Track
for some was a little too much at the end of the tramp, with some counting down the time on the 45 min
it took to get back to the car park. Best trampers for the day were Tom & Rachel, the two from the younger
gen set. Well done, come again.
