About 30 people turned up for an interesting magic carpet evening, where we visited three countries beginning with I – Iceland, Ireland and Italy.

First of all Sunny Sun took us to Iceland, beginning with the Blue Ice Caves, which needed to be visited in autumn or spring, too much water in summer and too cold in winter. Her party donned crampons to walk on the glaciers. The highlight of the trip was seeing the aurora in the night sky, a spectacular wonder of God’s creation. There was also the Church Mountain, waterfalls and the Icelandic horses.

Barbara Langridge took us on a tour of Southern Ireland. Her 3-week Operatunity tour was led by a trio of musicians including the well-known fiddler Marian Burns. Places visited included Dublin, Waterford Crystal Factory, Rock of Cashel, the last port of call for the Titanic, Blarney Castle, Killarney, Waterville, Cliffs of Moher, Kylemore Abbey, Galway and Croah Patrick – plus of course heaps of excellent musical entertainment!

We had our break for supper, then went on to Italy to do the Picturesque Tuscany 8-day Walk with Murray and Cathie Black. This 170km journey was a combination of bus travel and walking, preceded by train from Rome. The walking was mainly roads and paths, starting from Florence with stops at Greve, Castellina, Siena, Sam Gimignano, Volterra and Cecina on the coast, followed by train to Pisa. There was plenty to see – ancient buildings, mountains, farmland, a museum, city laneways, and much more.
