About 25 people braved the wild weather to meet at Remuera Baptist Church for our magic carpet evening.
Barbara Langridge began with a brief reflection and prayer, saying that the earth and its fullness is
of the Lord, and our gratefulness for being able to explore places with such beauty and amazing experiences.
Bryan Schroeder took us around the South Island on a 3-month odyssey from 3 Jan to 28 March,
driving down from Auckland with his wife Joanne and their caravan. Their first port of call was Stewart
Island which included seeing the native birds on Ulva Island and the Rakiura Track with its famous chain
sculpture. Then we went on to the Routeburn North Branch and Isthmus Peak on Lake Hawea with the mountain
scenery. Our final climax was Milford Sound with Mitre Peak, the fiord, and mountains with waterfalls.
We went with Paul and Ruth Ungemuth and Barbara Langridge to Tasmania on a month-long trip with Phillip
Donnell’s Footsteps Walking Club. The group of about 20 began with Port Arthur and its historic remains,
the coastal rock formations, Leven Canyon and The Nut. There was the historic township of Stanley, Lake
Dove, and wild wombats on the track. Hobart was an interesting city to explore, with Mt Wellington much
larger than its Auckland namesake with its panoramic views and rocky terrain. We went through some of
the national parks of Tasmania before going on to Launceston with its historic buildings and Cataract
Gorge. There were more national parks to see with their majestic scenery of bush, lakes, coastline and
mountains.
Barbara gave a plug for the Topo GPS phone app, a very useful tool for navigation,
and an appeal for volunteers to help with first aid and other training. Tina Chen gave an update on the
blue ABTC polo shirts. Many of us present were wearing the shirts, and came to the front to show them
off. Tina was taking a second round of orders for these popular garments.
We had a shared supper
afterwards, and a gold coin koha was collected to help with the hire of the venue.
