16 walkers met up at Matakana on a beautiful autumn Saturday morning and drove to Ti Point wharf for
the first coastal track. Before we set off we were treated to a pod of dolphins or orca hunting in the
harbour and they were seen several times during the walk.
The track started near the Omaha estuary
and made its way through attractive coastal bush to the rocky point which goes around to Mathesons Bay.
After our morning snack a few rock climbers passed us on their way to rock wall which was a bit further
along the coast and difficult to reach. We followed the climbers up a hillside to a fence stile which
gave access to a pathway dropping steeply to a rocky beach near the rock wall. We returned back to the
wharf and then drove to Matheson Bay to start the second track to Leigh. The track led us along the coast,
sometimes on pathways through holiday subdivisions and sometimes along the cliff tops with spectacular
views of the Hauraki Gulf. During the lunch break we had a devotion and prayed for Nepal and the victims
of the devastating earthquake.
On reaching Leigh we decided to finish the walk and returned back
to Matakana and afternoon tea at the Puhoi Cheese Factory.
