The weather was partly cloudy but dry. Leaving Auckland after 7.30am we arrived at the Waikino Railway
Station around 9.30am, and after morning tea we started our walk at 10.15am after transferring cars to
the other end of the track. We arrived at the museum on the large site of the old Waikino gold stamping
batteries at 10am and were briefed by volunteers (pre-arranged). Because there were 30 in our group they
offered us the choice of all three activities for $10 each - kiln tunnels, museum and miniature train
ride. All activities included a commentary by one of the volunteers and most people partook of all three.
After this one of our number went trout fishing. At 11.15am the remaining 29 began the walk westward
along the gorge, following the route of the old railway line (former Paeroa to Tauranga line), first
stopping at a side stream and looking at the Owharoa Falls where at 12.15pm we also enjoyed our lunch
and devotions. Our devotions considered the value of gold metal and compared it to a different type of
gold that we discover in the Bible.
We resumed our walk alongside the Ohinemuri River around 1pm
making good progress and arriving opposite the old Karangahake town site around 2pm where we climbed
up a side track to the Windows Walk which is an old tunnel system where gold was mined. From the openings
(windows) on the side of the main tunnel we looked down on the Waitawheta River (which comes from the
heart of the Kaimais) far below. There was a complex of major stone buildings adjacent to the tunnels
which formerly contained the Talisman Stamping Batteries used to process the gold ore.
Soon after
3pm we crossed the swing bridge over the main river to finish our walk at the Karangahake carpark and
headed back to Auckland. Those taking a coffee stop arrived back at 5.30pm.
