On Saturday 14 November twenty members took part in the Kaimai Project work dayon the Wairoa shelter track under the auspices of the Katikati Tramping Club. We stayed at Waihi Beach where Marian and David Kilgour catered splendidly and after an ABTC breakfast of porridge and brown sugar Nelson outlined the procedure for the day and led in devotion. He told of George Vesey Stewart the founder of the Katikati settlement with Ulster tenant farmers, Reinhold Lindemann who came from Germany to develop the farm on the road we are working on and the journeying of the Children of Israel and the challenges for ourselves with our spiritual journey. At the entrance to the park at Lindemann Rd Tom Carr the KKTC President and club members welcomed the ABTC members and gave advice on the work and tools as we formed three groups mixing members of each club. We walked up the ridge track of the Lindemann Loop for 1.5 hours and at the junction with the Wairoa shelter track the groups separated and proceeded to a section of track and agreed to meet at 3pm. A quick descent and then Athenree hot pools beckoned before a wonderful meal prepared by Marian and David Kilgour. Thank you Marian and David for yoursupport and catering.
In the evening a meeting evaluated the work day. Question 1. How did you like the work day? Concerted affirmation that it was worthwhile and enjoyable.Question 2. How could we have organised or prepared better? [It was acknowledged that this was a new experience for the club and we didn’t have any precedents]? Well organised with accommodation, provision of meals and hot pools really appreciated. Suggested that each groups tools could be considered at the start of the track as there were shortages eg spades in the cars yet two groups did not have a spade. Make a list of useful tools and items for each group for sorting before we depart. Gloves valued. Question 3. Would you come again? Members gave enthusiastic support for further work days on the project. Twice a year suggested. Question 4. Any other matters for consideration? The work involved hours of bending and some found that hard on their backs. The anticipation from some was that we would be cutting taller growth.

On the Sunday the group went to morning service at a local church followed by a walk before heading off home.
