The track involves a climb up onto the bush-clad Kaimai range, then traversing. Some muddy areas on the
track into Mangamuka and some treefalls were experienced but otherwise the track was mostly in good condition.
Extensive views from track ascending and also from the top of Waiwere Falls. The Waiwere Falls is 153m
high and is the highest falls in the North Island.
Brief description of daily track and terrain
- Saturday: From Te Tuhi Rd climbing to Mangamuka Hut, camp overnight, then Sunday: north to Wairere
Falls then descend to the plain below (17km). Carl recorded the maximum elevation as 570m.
Saturday
We were blessed to experience fine clear weather both days. Paul and Ruth collected a 12-seater rental
on Saturday morning 10 September at 8am from Eastern Rentals and the 10-person group departed from Bracken
Ave at 9am towing the club trailer. We arrived in Matamata where we picked up Ron Hatton (of Matamata
Baptist Church) and drove to the start of the track at the end of Te Tuhi Road, after which Ron returned
to Matamata with the van.
We started on the Te Tuhi track around 11.30am across farmland and
stopped for lunch before entering the bush. Gary shared a devotions. Then after climbing to the top of
the range we continued east across the bush clad plateau until reaching the track to Mangamuka Hut around
2.30pm and the hut itself at 4.10pm.
The hut has four bunks and there was one occupant already,
Rob, who was from England. The campsite next to the hut was about 20 metres square but fairly lumpy.
We carefully chose sites for two 2-person tents (Zeus) and one 3-person tent (Trios) while three ladies
occupied the hut. We gathered water from the nearby stream and used the hut bench for our cooking. That
night there was a wonderfully clear starry sky with a good white frost by next morning. We slept in warm
clothes and bags but when there was a light breeze we felt the cold air on our faces.
Sunday
Up at 6am we soon had porridge ready and after taking the tents down we departed at 8am. We returned
to the Te Hui track walking 35 minutes eastward to the junction with the North-South track, then we walked
north. We stopped for lunch about 12 noon and a reflection by Shane Kennedy. Continuing northward we
turned east once we met the Wairere track and arrived at the top of the falls around 2pm. After soaking
up the view of the water plunging off the cliff and the plains beyond we started our descent, pausing
at the main lookout and we arrived at the carpark at 4pm. We passed many people coming up the track to
look at the falls.
At the carpark we were met by Ron with our minivan. We returned to Matamata
for coffee and cake before departing for Auckland around 5pm, arriving back at Bracken Ave by 8pm (some
traffic delays). Thank you to all for the part you played – an enjoyable tramp and a good time of fellowship.
