Due to rain on the Saturday, we had to start this tramp a day later. We stayed in a bach at Waihi Beach
on Saturday night so we could start early on Sunday morning. Two people came down from Auckland early
on Sunday morning to make up our group of six.
Around 10:30am we started up the Lindemann Loop
(North) Track. This is a very easy gradient. The weather was perfect too. When we reached the Wairoa
Track junction we stopped for some lunch and some great scenery. At this point it is possible to see
the Ananui Falls in the far distance.
After three hours tramping we came across an old kauri dam
site. This was about the same place that the Lindermann Loop Track turns back to Lindemann Rd. From
here it was only another fifteen minutes to our destination, the Wairoa Shelter.
After setting
up our tents, having a cuppa and generally relaxing in the sun on the soft green grass, the ladies set
off for a short walk while the men gathered and cut wood for a fire after dark. Fortunately, beacause
it had rained the previous day, we had ample water running through what is the source of the Wairoa Stream.
There was plenty to drink, cook and wash with. In the middle of summer it could have well been another
story.
Later in the day we were joined by a young hunter and his wife, who was wanting to camp
there too. Throughout the evening we were able to share stories around the camp fire.
After a
good nights sleep we were up early for breakfast. Soon we were all packed up and headed back down the
Lindemann (north) Loop Track to the Wairoa Stream track junction. After some morning tea at the junction,
we headed on down the Wairoa Stream Track to the Wairoa Stream. This is a well formed track , although
it was a little overgrown in the first fifty meters.
The track crossed over the Wairoa Stream
four times before we reached the carpark at the end of Woodlands Rd. This a large river and would be
uncrossable after heavy rain. There were a number of side streams which caused no difficulty.
It
took us around three hours to complete the last days journey. One member of our group was very new to
overnight tramping and had a very enjoyable weekend.
