It was an early start to the day, as five of us set off at 7.00am from Bracken Ave. We arrived at the
Karangahake Mountain track Crown Road carpark and met our other two participants Ann and Alasdair. After
choosing which tools we would each carry we paused a moment to remember Nelson and dedicate the day to
him. This had been his project for the previous 10 years.
After a short walk up the road we turned
onto the track on the right known as the Mt Karangahake walk. We then split into 2 groups with the faster
group going to the summit and the slower group working on the lower sections of the track. This approach
enabled the entire length of the track from the road to the summit to be cleared.
We cut foliage
overhanging and encroaching on the track, cut gorse which had got away in some places. There were a few
windfalls we were also able to clear. A patch of gorse surrounding the summit pad and a short section
of gorse just past the side track to the translator should ideally be sprayed by someone holding a licence
to spray or by DOC.
Several walkers went by and were grateful for our work. It remains one of
the most popular walks in the area.
