Friday
450mm of rain in five days did not deter ABTC members from meeting at Waihi Beach on
Friday 30 September and enthusiastically working on the ABTC tracks of the Kaimai Project. Joy Whitehead
and June Sinclair had prepared food through the week and we enjoyed wonderful meals.
Saturday
Our cooks insisted on being track workers too and among the fifteen workers meeting at the park boundary
on the Saturday. After brief discussion about the project, our organisation and safety we prayed in thanks
and for guidance. Two groups of five were organised for the mountain with five going to the summit where
gorse is prominent and that group worked all day to widen the track. Another group of five worked on
the gorse slashed back in April two thirds up the mountain plus drainage on the low lying sections. Another
group hiked along County road to the Dubbo 96 and returned the same way finding the Dubbo 96 in excellent
order except for a washout . We will congratulate DOC on their work and also suggest that the track steps
be diverted around the washout and possibly an aid such as a rope installed for the stream crossing which
was in flood when we faced it. All members felt well satisfied with their day and many went to soak in
the Athenree spa before another mighty meal provided by our cooks. In the evening we reviewed the day
and noted that our visits occur in the Spring and Autumn and September is often an unsettled month and
later in the year may be better.
Sunday
The pattern of socialising at Waihi Beach for
the rest of the weekend was thought to be very worthwhile and an added attraction to the weekend. There
was discussion about the future work and Alasdair expressed the view that if we were satisfied with our
tracks we could assist the smaller KKTC as we did on our first visit while keeping to our twice a year
Kaimai routine. Nelson reported on his thought of individuals assisting KKTC on that clubs days and
still keeping our club days.
We went for a walk on the beach and went to morning service at the
local church before having our lunch and going home in the afternoon.
Thank you everyone for your
commitment. No defections despite the forecast. Recreational walkers expressed their appreciation for
our work. Our tracks are very useable and we are in maintenance mode with drains a new development to
enhance the tracks especially as the low sections are often saturated after the lengthy periods of rain
and they do not dry due to the shelter of the bush over the track.
PERSON-HOURS: 107 hours of
voluntary work. COST: Transport $30, food $15.
