The response to the walk was overwhelming with 27 confirmations when booking closed and 4 additional
that just turned up at start of walk.
At the scheduled time, we were able to organized ourselves
fairly promptly into two smaller manageable groups, one led by CS and Paul and the other by Hunter and
Andre. Due to the fine morning weather, many groups from the general public had also turned up to enjoy
the same tracks creating quite a buzz in an otherwise peaceful environment.
We managed to start
off the walk around 10.30am with the two groups doing the loop in the anticlockwise direction intending
to arrive at the Cosseys Dam for lunch. and Hunter gave devotions on the blessing of freedom. It reminded
one of the trampers of Mandela's quote: "as I walked out the door toward the gate that would lead to
my freedom, I knew if I didn't leave my bitterness and hatred behind, I'd still be in prison." Your choice,
your decision.
We were able to complete the 1st leg just slightly over 2 hours and after about
45 minutes rest, fellowship & lunch stopover, did the return 2nd leg in an hour arriving at the Hunua
Falls carpark just after 2pm where the participants dispersed to enjoy the Falls’ area and the rest of
the day at their leisure.
Even though one participant had to be accompanied back to the carpark
due to feeling unwell part way on the steady upwards walk to the Dam, the rest were able to enjoy all
the Hunua Ranges have to offer; views, forest, Kauri groves, bird lives, streams, splendid waterfalls
and well laid sign posted paths, on a pleasant sunny day.
