We left The Bracken at 8am and let up with more people at the Lower Huia Dam. From there we walked along
the Huia Dam Road, going on to Smith’s Road at the head of the Lower Huia Reservoir. We stopped for elevenses
at the end of Smith’s Road, a stop cut short by the cold weather.
From there we entered the bush,
climbing up the Hamilton Track to Summit Track. About halfway along the Summit Track towards Nihotupu
Ridge Track we stopped for our lunch.
Helena talked about the artist Albrecht Durer’s famous work
The Praying Hands and the story of sacrifice his brother Albert made so that Albrecht could study and
become a famous artist (see http://www.moytura.com/reflections/prayinghands.htm) This was related
to the sacrifice talked about in Philippians 2: 1-11, being that of Jesus Christ going all the way
to the cross for each one of us.
We returned to the car park at Huia down the Nihotupu Ridge Track
and Parau Track to complete a smorgasbord of road travel, easy bush tracks, some slipping in the mud,
thinking about God and getting a good workout. We relaxed over coffee at the cafe in Huia before heading
home.
