Ten people took advantage of a sunny afternoon just over a week before Christmas to explore one of the North Shore’s loveliest and leafiest suburbs, Greenhithe.

We set out soon after 2pm from the carpark at Wainoni Park, crossing Churchouse Rd and walking across a footbridge over a tidal inlet to come out on Roland Rd.

From there we went through the Oratau Reserve, a short but delightful bush walk coming out at the end of Oratau Place.

We had a short break at Greenhithe Wharf, a short roadbash from Oratau Place. We could look up Lucas Creek towards Albany and across the water to the hills of Paremoremo. The bright red flowers of pohutukawa trees on the water’s edge was a sight to behold.

A roadbash of about one kilometre brought us to Rahui Beach, a little cove looking out across to Herald Island.

A stepped bush track brought us up to Marae Rd, just a few minutes from Marae Reserve and our afternoon tea break. We could look out across to Herald Island and to Hobsonville.

Geoff shared how he had been reading a book Grand Weaver by Ravi Zacharias, that describes how God shapes us through our lives, as a weaver. He makes a coherent purpose for our lives like a tapestry - we may not appreciate as we live that God is doing this. Geoff told a story about The House With The Golden Windows. This was about a little boy who would look out across the valley from his home at about dinner time, and see a house on the other side whose windows had a golden appearance. One day the boy packed some bread for lunch, and set out across the valley. He came to where the house was, but could not see any golden windows. By now it was late afternoon, and he saw a girl come out, and asked her where the house with the golden windows was. The girl led him up a hill and pointed to a house with golden windows in the distance. That house turned out to be the boy’s home he had set out from that morning. The moral is - we need to trust the Weaver, He knows all about us.

We roadbashed past some nice hice to come out on Greenhithe Rd, then followed a flash new walkway through Wainoni Park South and back to the carpark.

Before going home we enjoyed a lovely coffee at the Malthouse Village Pub.
