As on previous training events of this type we did not really take a route, rather we used the whole of Duder Regional Park as our training area. The training was to brush up skills on map and compass and especially how to use the compass with the map.   Main topics we covered were:-

a) Examining a Map for features and information.
b) Learning how to orientate the map without a compass
c) Using a map to estimate distances and tramping to check our predictions
d) Understanding the Magnetic N and Grid N readings
e) Understanding the difference between the 3 types of North.
f) Parts of a compass – how to use a compass to walk in a set direction (i.e. on a bearing)
g) Learning how to orientate the map with a compass
h) Using the map to navigate to the next place on the map
i)  Understanding "handrails", attack points" and "collecting features"
j)  Using a compass to determine the bearing of distant points on a map
k)  Using a compass to navigate the "direction to travel" to the next place on the map
l)  Understanding and practising the need to "aim off"
m)  Learning how to transfer the bearing of a distant point on to the map to determine location.

Peter gave a short devotions similar to one of his previous ones but very appropriate to this training event. Peter likened the invisible magnetic lines of force to the love of God. Always there and surrounding us, and enveloping the world. The compass is the tool to help us receive the invisible force. We cannot see it but it can potentially save our life. Have confidence in using it. The compass reliably gives us a firm direction and similarly Jesus gives us the firm direction for our living. Peter quoted John 3:16  For God so loved the world that he gave his only son, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.

COST: $2 from everyone to Val and Peter for training resources and materials.
