Saturday
Setting out from Auckland around 8.30am we drove to Dickey’s Flat where we parked and
started our tramp south along the North-South Kaimai track. The track followed the Waitawheta Track upstream
for about 40 minutes before we reached the point where the Waitawheta River must be crossed. The river
was wide and the water was above our knees with the rocks beneath uneven. However the water flow was
only moderately strong so the crossing was very safe. On the other side the track left the stream and
eventually rose up a steep incline for several hundred metres. I was here that we had our lunch. There
were periods of light rain. Further on David Titheridge gave a devotions on the Prodigal Son. We reached
the Daly’s Clearing hut at 4.50pm about 6 hours after setting off, including about 4.5 hours walking.
There were 39 people staying at the hut or in tents. Five our group found bunks in the hut while
three slept in the tents and two on the floor. There was a large Seventh Day Adventist youth group which
frequently burst into song or laughter and other young folks singing Christian choruses also – a very
uplifting experience.
Sunday
Departure was about 8.30am and instead of returning by
the same route we continued east on the Daly’s Clearing track going down to the Waitawheta River and
then following the river north until we reached the Franklin Road car park at about 11.15am. A family
group offered one of our drivers a lift to pick up his vehicle from the Dickey Flat car park so that
our group did not need to do a long walk around the roads.
Around 12 noon we reached the L&P
Café at Paeroa for lunch and following a smooth run of traffic we were back in Auckland about 3pm.
