Four courageous walkers set off from the Onehunga Lagoon, in spite of the inclement weather forecast,
knowing that if the weather deteriorated we could stop at any time and catch a bus back! We left the
lagoon in drizzle, pleased to be outdoors in the fresh air dressed in appropriate wet weather gear. We
made our way thru Onehunga and Royal Oak to One Tree Hill, Maungakiekie, in great time. As seen in the
photo, Phil was up the top of One Tree Hill looking back to the start of the walk, and water was on the
lens of the camera as it was still trying to spit. We then had a leisurely morning tea stop in the Cornwall
Park Café, enjoying the piping hot Devonshire scones and coffee.

As the sun began to shine, we decided to carry on with our walk and headed through Epsom towards
Mt Eden. Crowds of people were enjoying the view in fine weather at the summit of Mt Eden, but the wind
was building and the Waitakeres looked ominous.

As we descended down Mt Eden the sky opened up and we had a brief shower of heavy rain. We continued
our walk into the Domain where we stopped for a late lunch at the Kiosk. From there it didn’t take us
long to the end of the walk, along Princes St and to the monument of the original site of St Paul’s church
in Emily Place. From there we went to Britomart, where we caught the train back to Ellerslie, this was
an unexpected and enjoyable ending to the walk. We are grateful to June’s sister giving us a ride from
the station back to our cars in Onehunga.
Time: 5.5 hours including leisurely stops.
