Auckland Baptist Tramping Club

This was the third such challenge and we had the largest number of entrants but the fewest members volunteering as Marshalls. Without the helpers these events cannot happen.  We were struggling this year with so few.

The challenge was based at Whatipu. The Bronze route went up Walker Ridge to Karamatura Forks and Mt Donald McLean, returning via Omanawanui. The Silver route took in the Twin Peaks and Karamatura Valley as well. The Gold route had all these plus the Huia Dam tracks.

We are very grateful to Peter Y for encouraging 20 members to participate.    Unfortunately one of our members was called to his work on Saturday and unable to compete, leaving 19 ABTC competitors. We also had one non-member team sponsored by David and Marian of 4 young people practising for the Oxfam trailwalker. Maybe the club should publish the link to the Oxfam website and encourage some sponsorship for them. In addition we had 4 members of the Howick Tramping Club who entered as 2 teams of 2. Two of these folk had joined in the Silver challenge last year.

We think it was the best challenge we have run and feel that the day went really well.   Because of the very limited cellphone coverage in the Waitakeres a better means of communication around the course should be explored.
