Over 40 people came along on a hot summer’s afternoon for a walk through tracks, reserves and the coastline
of Campbells Bay. Two carloads of 5 left The Bracken at 1:30pm and met up with the others at the end
of Rae Rd.
After leader Alan gave a brief talk on the history of the area, we set off about 2:20pm
to walk through Campbells Bay School and a reserve to come to the coast at Castor Bay.

There was a climb up a steep concrete path to the old pa site at Rahopara Point, where we enjoyed
the coastal views from a lookout. From there we followed a cliff top track, being part of the Te Araroa
Trail, to come out at Kennedy Park. This part of the trail is locked at night because it passes the back
of people’s homes.

We had a quick look at World War II gun emplacements before dropping down a wooden staircase to the
foreshore below.

There was a mixture of beach and rocks walking as we carried on to Campbells Bay beach. There were
patches of black ironsand of the type found on the west coast.

After a break and an icecream we road bashed and walked through a lovely puriri-lined track in Centennial
Park, to finish with an outdoor afternoon tea hosted by Alan’s family about 4:10pm.
