Thirty eight people gathered at the carpark in Canberra Avenue in Lynfield and two more joined us at
Fairsea Place, making a total of 40 walkers. The weather was fine - a pleasant reprieve from all the
rain of the previous week.
We began our walk by taking the concrete path down to Wattle Bay before
climbing the steep track up through bush to Sylvania Crescent. We then walked around the Manukau Domain,
up Himalaya Crescent and into Fairsea Place where the track plunged into bush again and then followed
the coast below some very palatial houses. A lookout provided attractive views across the Manukau.
After climbing up a grassy area we reached Strathnaver Crescent and followed the track down to Lynfield
Cove. From here we were able to go round the rocks a short distance to some steps which climbed up into
Lynebrooke Avenue. There was then a steep road bash up to Donovan Street and then on to Lewis Street.
At Lewis Street we entered the Avondale South Domain and followed a labyrinth of paths through to
the lower end of Blockhouse Bay Road where cars were parked ready for the return journey. Due to the
steepness and slowness of the walk there was not time to spend on Blockhouse Bay Beach and everyone’s
fitness was challenged by the ‘ups and downs’ encountered along the way. Forty people is a large number
to manage and the group became quite ‘strung out’ at times but we were able to enjoy the beauty of the
bush and sea while getting some healthy exercise along the way.
