A summery autumn afternoon brought out a total of 37 people to take a walk through the coastal areas
of Birkenhead. We met outside Birkenhead Primary School on Mokoia Rd near the Highbury shops at 1:45pm,
and after the introduction and karakia we set out at 2pm to go down Porritt Ave and into Chatswood Reserve
from Mappin Place. As we entered the native bush reserve we sprayed our shoes at a cleaning station set
up to prevent kauri dieback disease.

Ted was telling us all about the kahikateas and other native trees as we walked up the reserve towards
the top. We then turned around to follow the track down the stream to come out near a pond that had originally
been created for the Chelsea Sugar Refinery when it was established in the late 19th century.

We went on to the Chelsea Refinery carpark, and after a five minute break beside the water’s edge
we went on to the Chelsea Bay beach. There was a steep climb up to Rugby Rd, and we continued along Palmerston
Rd and enjoy another break at the end of Tizard Rd. Some of us went up a temporary viewing tower built
by the real estate agents to show a potential view from a house that could be built on the section.

From there we walked down through bush to come out at Hinemoa Park beside Birkenhead Wharf.
