A group of 17 including several children had a lovely time exploring the Arataki Nature Trail in the
Waitakere Ranges. We gathered outside the Arataki Visitors Centre on Scenic Drive, and after our intros
and prayer we set out at 1:55pm, going through a short tunnel under Scenic Drive. As with all the tracks
in the Waitakere Ranges, we had to go through a kauri dieback shoe spray station. We were each given
a sheet with pictures of various native plants to look for and identify these as we walked this trail
through native bush. These included rimu, lancewood, nikau, ponga, epiphite, liane and kauri. There was
signage along the trail pointing out various native trees and plants, and other features. We had good
discussions about these, being an educational experience for the kids. A couple of kereru wood pigeons
were seen in the trees. It was Joy's birthday, and she handed out some sweetietreats. Our 1.4km walk
finished at 3:05pm.
After a group photo at the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park frame, we went in
to the Arataki Visitors Centre to see a 12min film Dusk To Dawn In The Waitakere Ranges. We then went
up to the museum and souvenir shop, with a range of informative displays and views out to Lower Nihotupu
Reservoir with Manukau Harbour in the distance.
