Friday
Mangetepopo Camp School was a welcome and comfortable rest spot after the trip from Auckland
slowed initially by heavy traffic.
Saturday
We made our way up the valley in cloudy conditions
with squally weather from the saddle to the turn off to the circuit. Heading south and losing altitude
we were immediately sheltered from the northerly wind. The limited visibility did not allow us good views
and we proceeded on to Oturere hut for lunch and hot drink, and appreciated devotions led by Barbara.
As soon as we left the crossing we were sheltered from the Northerly wind and so we proceeded in calm
but sometimes showery conditions. The tramp from Oturere to Waihohonu was completed in comfort and we
enjoyed the changing scenery. We enjoyed social activity a meal and beds in the hut.
Sunday
The day dawned clear and sunny. Several said that they would like to take the side tramp to the Tama
lakes and Nelson set off with this group while Paul led those who were content to tramp direct to Whakapapa.
The Tama lakes looked great in the sun and this group took a number of photos before hurrying on so that
the whole group would not be delayed for transport. It was satisfying for them to catch up to the direct
group and leave for the hot pools at 1-30pm. There was great satisfaction relaxing in the warm sunshine
and bathing in the hot pools before a prompt return home. Nelson and Paul were really appreciative of
the wonderful team effort on a vigorous tramp.
