Seventeen people enjoyed a lovely warm afternoon exploring Tawhitokino Beach, a short walk from the
road-end east of Kawakawa Bay.
We left The Bracken soon after 1pm and drove to the end of Kawakawa
Bay Coast Road past the bay’s eastern headland. From the roadend we set off along the coastline a
short way before walking up into bush over Paparoa Point. We then dropped down to walk the long
stretch of Tawhitokino Beach.
Our afternoon tea stop was at the far end of the beach, where we
could look out across to Ponui Island, home of the Scripture Union ISCF camp and venue of several
Club trips in the past when local fishermen took us across from Kawakawa Bay. We could also see McCallum’s
Island which has been visited occasionally by Ponui campers in canoes.
We then scrambled over
the large rocks east of the bay before returning back along the beach - and a second rest stop at
the western end - and through the bash back to the carpark. We were back by 5:15, and stopped at Clevedon
for icecreams - Streets/Tip Top for us, and Shell for the cars.
