Eighteen participants enjoyed very comfortable accommodation in the Lodge at the Lakeview Bible Camp
on Lake Rotorua. The weather was fine for us (it only rained during Saturday evening) and, as usual,
we shared good fellowship.
On Saturday there were a choice of various length walks in Whakarewarewa
Forest, and it was very pleasing that all opted to do the longest walk of 14 km. from the southern end
of Blue Lake, around the Lake to pick up the Forest Circuit track and to follow it back on the easterly
side of the forest to the Visitor Centre. Two intrepid walkers, after making enquiries at the Visitor
Centre, chose to part from us when we met the Circuit track and to follow it around the northern and
western route, a total distance of approximately 19 km. This involved a lovely walk beside the Green
Lake and, later, very unexpectedly encountering a large area of newly felled trees which severely impeded
their progress. Luckily they eventually regained the track and made good time down to the Visitor Centre
(even if they did get a lift from a kind motorist over the last few kilometres!). Apart from experiencing
a few difficulties due to poor, or non-existent, signs, the group of sixteen enjoyed a relatively easy
and varied walk through the forest where areas of redwoods were much admired, and most then went for
a soak in the Polynesian Pools in Rotorua. Joy led the thought-provoking devotion prior to our evening
meal back at Lakeview Bible Camp with her strong experience of God’s presence throughout her long illness
(cancer), treatment and recovery.
Our Sunday walk was the Te Waihou Walkway near Putaruru. This
4.7 km. walkway was opened in 2000 and follows the Waihou Stream, firstly through grassy paddocks and
passed newly planted re-vegetation, and then gradually climbs through a dramatic gorge to Blue Spring
and a picnic area. Here we ate our lunch, while watching trout in the clear water and enjoying the beautiful
scenery. Mark led us in our devotion in this truly inspirational setting. After a final ten minute walk
we parted at the Leslie Road car park at 1.30 pm to make our way in our individual car loads back to
Auckland via Matamata and State Highway 27, where we could look out across the plains to the Kaimai Ranges,
