This was a tramp with a difference - about eighteen people went on a trip to the Canadian Rockies. Our
leaders Marian and David took us from Vancouver by ferry to Vancouver Island then by bus to Victoria.
After visiting some of our leaders’ relatives, we all got into a campervan for our tour of the Canadian
Rockies. We crossed the Capilano Suspension Bridge, visited the Westlin ski resort, walked beside Lake
Louise, drove through the Mt. Robson National Park, admired the Fraser Canyon and did heaps more - with
the aid of David’s photos of a recent trip there put onto video with a specially-made commentary.
Once back from our armchair journey Club training officer Laurie told us about how to pack for a full-backpack
trip such as our forthcoming summer tramps. The basic principles in deciding what to take can be covered
by asking yourself the following questions: What do I want to take? What if it is cold? (jersey,
swandri, balaclava, etc) What if it rains? (parka, pack cover, etc) What if it gets hot? (sunburn
cream, swimming togs, etc) What if I get hurt? (plaster, ointment, first aid, etc) To make my
pack lighter, what can I do without? (eg. instead of taking a pillow, use a jersey)
Take
heaps of plastic bags - to put wet socks in, to keep T-shirts dry, etc. Remember - what you take you
will carry - don’t bring the kitchen sink!
David took to the piano to lead Happy Birthday for
another David who was there. A delicious supper followed, and we had the opportunity of doing the Canadian
Rockies journey once more, this time in album-browsing format.
