Twenty people turned up to what was to be an exact repeat of a trip the club did two years ago - a walk
to include Hamlins Hill and Mt Richmond in the Westfield area. The weather was a little better this time
- last time we had cold wind and passing showers; this time we had a strong wind but it was quite sunny
and mild.
We set out about 2pm from the car park near the corner of Great South Road and Sylvia
Park Road, entering the rolling paddocks of the Hamlins Hill Regional Park.

We went over towards the northern side of the park and had a look of the remains of an old stone
fence that possibly dated back to the early European times over a hundred years ago. And looking the
other way we could see the twisting spaghetti ribbons of the Southern Motorway and the South Eastern
Highway, just a few years old.

We then walked up through an area of growing native bush that had been planted just a few years ago.
From there we went up to the reservoir at the summit of Hamlins Hill and had some excellent viewsof
the Manukau Harbour and the eastern suburbs of Auckland.
From there we dropped down on to Sylvia Park Road and along Mt Wellington Highway for an afternoon
tea stop at Wendys, just across the road from the Duke of Wellington drinking clinic.
Our stomachs recharged, we carried on along Mt Wellington Highway and into the Bert Hanham Reserve.
While we were waiting for the group to come together again, David raced of the two young children up
and down the playing field.
We climbed one of the peaks of Mt Richmond through an old scoria quarry.
It was a steep scramble to the top, where we have a view out towards Otahuhu.
