Friday

We arrived at Bell Block Baptist Church for the night at 12.15 a.m. after a wet and windy journey.

Saturday

Rising late at Bell Block, we sorted food and equipment before proceeding to Dawson Falls.

The mountain was coated in cloud, it was cold, and raining steadily. After encountering a party of 11 from Hamilton Tramping Club, intending to head for the same 16-bunk hut, our party decided to remain at Dawson Falls and stay in the Konini Lodge. The DOC ranger offered us 2 nights for the price of one.

On Saturday afternoon we embarked on a 4 hour circuit to The Plateau and return via Waingongoro Hut. The sun came out briefly.

Sunday

On Sunday morning, 4 persons set out in inclement weather for Lake Dive Hut via the Lower Track. The rest of us travelled by van to Oaanui to view the Maui Gas Visitor Centre displays. While there, it became obvious that the weather was improving, so we hastily returned to Dawson Falls for lunch, then eight set off for Syme Hut on the summit of Fantham's Peak. We got there in 2.5 hours. On the way down we met the group of 4, who had come over the Upper Track to the Kapuni Lodge junction, and decided to make the ascent to Syme too. The first group made it down in 1.5 hours, the other 4 arriving about an hour later (after about 9 hours of walking). A calm, clear evening ensued, with good views of the mountain.

Monday

On Monday we walked to Dawson Falls around the Kapuni Walk, before cleaning up and departing for Auckland. We stopped for lunch at Mokau and reached Bracken Avenue at 5 p.m.

Cost: $95 (transport - $30, accommodation - $35, food/fuel - $30).
