A sunny windless winter afternoon brought out 17 people to explore the bush reserves in the vicinity
of Blockhouse Bay.
We set out about 2pm from the carpark at the bottom of Endeavour St, on the
Blockhouse Bay foreshore, and climbed up to the end of Taunton Terrace. Did we hear a train whistle -
perhaps the weather was so calm we could hear the Glenbrook Vintage Railway across the water?
A
bush track took us along the clifftops, going down and up, with occasional views out across the Manukau
Harbour, coming out near the far end of Taunton Terrace.
We re-entered the bush dropping down
to Green Bay for a rest stop beside the beach. The tide was right in.
As we continued along Portage
Rd we could see a large tower used by scouts staying at the Motu Moana scout camp for abseiling practice.
We carried on into Craigavon Park, past the children’s playground and into more bush, going along
a wide track among the tall trees.
Once out of the park, a roadbash brought us to our icecreamerological
stop at the Blockhouse Bay shops.
Tummies charged with magnums and moritzes, we entered the bush
of Avondale South Domain, doing a side trip down to Flounder Bay.
As the tide was still in, we
had to return and continue along the main track of the domain to come out on Blockhouse Bay Rd, just
two minutes walk from our cars. We finished at one minute past four, having enjoyed a lovely time of
fellowship and exercise on a very pleasant afternoon.
