The Club has had Israeli and square dance nights in the past, but this time we tried something different
- a ballroom dance evening. About 35 people turned up for an enjoyable evening at St George’s Church
hall in Epsom
A 7pm start was advertised instead of the normal 7:30pm start, as the owners of
the hall requested the place to be vacated no later than 11pm, as there was a large rest home just across
the road from the church in a normally quiet residential area. The dancing got under way at 7:15pm, with
Peter Piriam, who leads the monthly Auckland Christian Singles dances at the Epsom Normal Intermediate
School hall, in charge.

Partners were not required for the occasion. There was a dance sequence at one stage where men and
ladies walked around in circles in opposite directions and when the music stopped, the lady standing
opposite became the gentleman’s partner for one ballroom dance, and when that dance finished the Scottish
music would resume as we went around in circles again to select different partners for the next dance.
A lovely pot-luck finger-food supper followed, then we were entertained to a dance by Carole and
Gary, now dressed in tramping clothes and wearing day packs, to the rock ‘n’ roll song Walking Back
to Happiness by Helen Shapiro.

Some of us took to the dance floor for the monte carlo - a very common ballroom game where the floor
is divided up into four quarters - spades, clubs, hearts, diamonds - and when the music stops one of
these suits is drawn by breaking a pack of cards or other means, and either those on the suit drawn,
or not on the suit drawn, have to leave the dance floor. This is repeated until there is only one couple
left, thus winning the game.

About half a dozen door prizes were then drawn out of the hat and given out. A couple more dances,
and it was all over and everyone danced their way home, mostly in their cars with at least one person
on a push-bike.
